Research for documentary

The topic I have chosen for my documentary is Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response or ASMR for short.

Primary research:

Primary research is research done by yourself so writing a survey or asking for peoples opinions in interviews or such.

I wrote up a survey to collect thoughts on ASMR and an interest in an ASMR documentary these were the results:

As can be seen by the research the topic is known by a higher majority of people however a much lower amount of people have actually gone and watched an ASMR video, and then around half of the people actually found it calming and enjoyable. then people were possibly interested in the documentary about it

For the documentary i will expose a few of my friends to ASMR videos and ask for their thoughts

Secondary research:

Secondary research is information gathered form the internet or other sources that isn't primary research, research done by others.

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is an experience characterized by a static-like or tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. It has been compared

Autonomous – spontaneous, self-governing, within or without control
Sensory – pertaining to the senses or sensation
Meridian – signifying a peak, climax, or point of highest development
Response – referring to an experience triggered by something external or internal

Triggers for ASMR
Listening to a softly spoken or whispering voice
Listening to quiet, repetitive sounds resulting from someone engaging in a mundane task such as turning the pages of a book
Watching somebody attentively execute a mundane task such as preparing food
Receiving altruistic tender personal attention
Initiating the stimulus through conscious manipulation without the need for external video or audio triggers

ASMRtists:
Adopted by YouTubers who commonly post videos of themselves creating stimulating videos that trigger the ASMR response, spawned the unofficial-official title to which they call themselves: ASMRtists. These are individuals who invoke the ASMR reaction, or response, or otherwise known as the ones who execute the triggers for visual, or audible pleasure.
Unintentional ASMR: There are series of videos that create ASMR feelings even when the person in the video isn't specifically going for triggers for ASMR, these things can be head massages or any massage of the kind. One big example of unintentional ASMR is the painter Bob Ross and his painting show the joy of painting, His voice is calming and the brush noises to canvas trigger ASMR.

Quantitative research:
Quantitative research is research that can be numerical only, Programme ratings, readership circulation figures, hits on a website, box office figures, sales of CDs and DVDs. are some examples of how quantitative research is gathered.
I managed to gather Quantitative research using my survey with this question:

This only has 2 straightforward answers so it gives out numerical data for people that have and haven't watched ASMR videos

Qualitative research:
Qualitative research is research that can't be defined by numbers and usually has extended responses to the question to get a better response. Film reviews, game reviews, fanzine websites, attitudes to media products, responses to news coverage, responses to advertising campaigns, discussion. These are examples of how to get Qualitative research.

I used my survey to get Qualitative research through this question:#

This question takes the people who answered yes and they expand on how it felt, this gives quantitative research and gives me a better understanding on how people feel about ASMR.
Data gathering agencies:
Data gathering agencies are agencies that gather the figures (Quantitative/Qualitative research) from Tv/film such as Most popular program viewed on a certain channel at a time or information on actors/directors

This shows the most viewed programs on the week ending 21st may which is from the BARB site. showing the quantitative data that BARB collects.
As well as BARB there are many others such as IMDb which collects information on TV/Film regarding actors/directors/crew/sales figures and such.

Audience/market research:

Audience research
Audience research is research into what the audience wants to see made

The audience research i did for my project goes to the survey question where is asked about whether they wish to see a documentary about ASMR:

Market research:

Market research is researching against other people creating or have created content on the specific thing that your content will be broadcasted on. For market research i looked at different 3 minute wonders on Channel 4. also for more market research i saw that ASMR is being explored by a few of mainstream media so a documentary explaining what it is would be received well.

Production research:
production research is research into the costs and personnel required for the production. For my production research i didn't really need anything is particular just people to speak about ASMR so i chose some people to watch and then talk about their experience with ASMR

Pre production:

This is will be the room I will use in order to shoot the interviews, I will place the interviewees in front of the green screen and use lighting to make the footage look well lit and bright so that the green screen can work effectively.
